ONE AWESOME WEEKEND FOR THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS MUSIC FEST!
Bettina Richter

It was all ‘Peace Love and Powder’ for the 2nd year of the Perisher Snowy Mountains of Music Festival. Over 4000 people attended Perisher’s awesome 4 day music festival on the June long weekend. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and lots of powder, audiences reveled in the unique surrounds and packed into over 12 venues across the resort to experience many of Australia’s top bands and sounds from around the world.
With over 50 bands and 150 acts it was an unforgettable festival with headliners and festival favourites pulling the biggest crowds. Music connoisseurs came out in the snow to see one of Australia’s most formidable talents Jeff Lang live and intimate, whilst on Saturday night the Perisher crowd partied till late with Mista Savona from Melbourne with a set to remember fusing hip hop vocals from Vi’da Sunshine with Hugo’s freestyling rap and some great reggae grooves.
Sunday night Smiggins was the place to be and proved to be the biggest night of the whole festival. It was a stellar line-up starting with the big blues sound of Chase the Sun followed by The Tealeaves, Jeff Lang, some impromptu circus burlesque from Circus Wow and the only appearance by Blue King Brown which had festival-goers packing the floor till late into the night. Last year’s festival favourites A French Butler Called Smith drew crowds everywhere they went with their kooky costumes and funked-up brass, whilst the wonderful and witty sound of The Hussy Hicks created a hoe-down at every show the gals frequented.
The poetry program once again proved popular with festival-goers. The Broken Ski Award went to Max Merckenschlager from South Australia for his outstanding poem Snowy Mountain Magic which was dedicated to families and friends of the 1997 Thredbo Village landslide victims. The Snowy Poetry Cup – the festival’s live poetry slam - was won by Nimmity Zappert from Sydney.
The kids festival at Perisher Centre brought some festival sunshine to the snow for the little and big, with a line-up of fantastic entertainment alongside many opportunities to get your hands dirty with circus, songs, storytelling and music at over 20 sessions over the weekend.
With one festival under their belt, the super organization and detail of this year’s festival was apparent, with the festival team working very hard alongside a very dedicated group of passionate volunteers. From big acts to small, to tango and African workshops, everything ran very professionally and transport between venues went like clockwork.
Stay tuned - Festival Team will meet soon to discuss 2011 and applications for artists will be open from October on. More pics up on the festival website as well as on our Facebook page.
